Sermon Notes May 29, 2022 – The Counsel of the Holy Spirit

James Weidner III   -

The Counsel of the Holy Spirit

Introduction:

  • We started last week with The Counsel of the Word.
  • The Word of God is sufficient to be the source of Counsel for all things pertaining to life and Godliness.
  • A People of the Word.
  • Mastering one book above all others.

2 Peter 1:3 (NKJV) as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

  • Knowledge is power.

“through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue”

  • But not just any knowledge.
  • Precise and correct knowledge.
  • Knowledge of things ethical and divine
  • Knowledge that comes from the promises found in His Word.
  • His promises become the focal point of our prayer life.
  • When we as a people know not what He has spoken to us how can one grab a hold of the Words unknown.
  • Ela… Seth always says “I told youuuu” “I told youuuu”
  1. Partakers of a new and divine nature:

“partakers of the divine nature”

  • Divine spoken of the only and true God, trinity
  • Sharers of God’s nature.
  • A new way of doing things.
  1. Holy Spirit imparted wisdom is knowing what to do with this power of divine knowledge.

Proverbs 24:7 (NKJV) Wisdom is too lofty for a fool; He does not open his mouth in the gate.

Proverbs 29:11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards

  • As one minister says… wisdom is the application of knowledge.
  • Therefore wisdom comes through the knowledge of the Word, encountering the presence and power of the Holy Spirit and experience through time gained from living a Godly life.
  1. The Holy Spirit is not the same as man’s wisdom.

1 Corinthians 2:13 (NKJV) These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

  • The wisdom that comes from above can complete opposite to what our own world wisdom and upbringing may tell us.

Romans 12:19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

  1. The Holy Spirit teaches us all things.

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

    1. 5.1. The Holy Spirit is our teacher.
      • to teach
      • to be a teacher
      • to discharge the office of a teacher,
      • conduct one’s self as a teacher
      • to teach one something
    1. 5.2. The Holy Spirit takes the time to teach us when we take the time to be with Him.
      • Think about this for a moment…
      • Teaching takes time.
      • Teaching requires patience.
      • Teaching is a vital, proud yet humble
      • to hold discourse with others in order to instruct them,
    1. 5.3. The divine nature of the Holy Spirit’s counsel in our life.
      • To impart instruction
      • To instill doctrine into one
      • To explain or expound a thing
  1. What happens without counsel.

Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV) Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

Proverbs 15:22 (NKJV) Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established.

Proverbs 24:6 (NKJV) For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety.

  • Without counsel of the Holy Spirit, the Word, from those Godly sources around you unilateral decisions are made.
  • These decisions seem to be the result of being un-counseled, too emotional, offended, hurt, angry…
  • Unilateral: plan of an action or decision performed by only one person, (or group, or country) involved in a particular situation, without the agreement of another or others.
